Languages enhancement at UTB

The University of Tourism, Technology and Business studies (UTB), is a higher learning institution that offers degree, diploma and certificate programs. Languages, i.e. English, French and Kiswahili are taught in all these programs. All languages are very important but at different levels depending on the weight assigned to each.  Even if English and French are international languages, the former is the language in which all modules are taught and is an international language mostly considered at Rwandan labor market. For this reason, it is credit rated and before exiting, students sit for the final English test at the level of TOEFL and in addition to degrees, they are awarded English proficiency certificates.

Entry at UTB

To better deliver the languages at UTB, students sit for a placement test. The results split them into three groups:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

Languages practice

Practice makes perfect; in the different groups, students practice the languages through:

  • Use of English in UTB compound
  • Presentations to the lecturers and to their peers.
  • Language clubs (debates, drama, public talk and storytelling).
